Hardware raid can't do that. Most hardware raid is just software raid anyway. Microsoft's OSs are buggy enough that they should really support this configuration. Well, you can get a low-end RAID card for next to nothing nowaday: it'll be more stable and have a better chance of actually doing some good in case of failure than the OS's functionality although it'll still be "software" RAID unless you go for the really high end cards.
